Afternoon: Guests arrive in time for afternoon tea, which will be served from 3pm onwards
7pm Assemble in the Library to meet your fellow guests over a glass of champagne, and for a short introductory talk by your host, Nicholas Merchant
7.30pm Dinner to be served in the main Dining Room
Monday 18th April 2011
7.30-9.30am Full English breakfast served in the main Dining Room. .
10-11am Talk, The Mania for Marble. Nicholas will talk on the 18th century’s fascination with collecting Ancient Greek and Roman sculpture and some of the great British collections this hobby created, including that of the Lansdowne family.
11am Morning coffee.
Remainder of the day free.
Guests are invited to visit at their own leisure the superlative Rhododendron Woodland Gardens, much of which have been developed by the current Marquis
5.45pm Visit to Bowood House for drinks to meet The Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne.
7.45pm Depart Bowood to return to the hotel.
8.00pm Dinner to be served in the main Dining Room.
Tuesday 19th April 2011
7.30-9.30am Full English Breakfast served in the main Dining Room. .
9.45am Depart by bus for Bowood House, where guests will have a private guided tour of the Diocletian Wing and Exhibition Rooms by the Curator, Dr.Kate Fielden. The varied collection contains superb European works of art, as well as souvenirs of the Lansdowne family’s involvement in the politics of India and the United States, the work of the 18th century pioneer scientist Joseph Priestley, and an extensive collection relating to Napoleon Bonaparte.
11am Morning Coffee
11.30am Guided tour of the Diocletian Terraces with the Curator, with, in the event of inclement weather, a chance to return for a closer look at the Collections indoors.
12.30 Light Lunch served in the House Restaurant..
1.30pm Guided tour of the Marquis and Marchioness’s private garden and grounds by Rosie Abel Smith, the Garden Consultant of the estate and the Head Gardener, David Glass.
IN THE EVENT OF INCLEMENT WEATHER
1.30pm Depart by bus for Lacock Abbey and Village. Lacock village centred on the medieval former abbey is one of the best preserved (and photographed) villages in England.
4.00pm Depart Bowood/Lacock to return to the hotel.
7.30pm Dinner served in the main Dining Room
