Sunday 21st November

Guests arrive during the afternoon.
7.00pm Guests gather in the lounge for a welcome drink and a short introductory talk by your host Nicholas Merchant.
7.30pm Dinner.

A Mania for Marble

Monday 22nd November
8.30-9.30 Breakfast.
9.45-10.45 A Mania for Marble with Nicholas Merchant. Many of the great collections of 18th century Antique Sculpture were formed in the North of England. Nicholas looks at the reasons behind this cumbersome hobby.
10.45-11.15 Morning Coffee.
11.15-12.15 Masterclass with Dr David Cross; Fascinating Faces, British Characters and their Portraits. The treatment of the British face in portraiture from Holbein to Hockney. Dr Cross is a Research fellow of Durham University.
12.30-1.30 Lunch (not included)
1.30 Depart by coach to visit Cumbria Crystal
2.00-3.00 Guided tour of Cumbria Crystal Glass Factory. This factory makes full lead glass in the traditional manner. We shall have a guided tour of the factory illustrating the various processes, and a chance to see glass engraving techniques.
3.30 Return to Rothay for Afternoon tea.
Rest of the afternoon free.
7.30 Dinner.

Tuesday 23rd November
8.30-9.30 Breakfast
9.45 Depart by coach for Great Salkeld
11.00 Visit G K Hadfields, the clock specialists, where we shall have a talk on the mysteries and intricacies of the clock, with coffee on arrival.
12.30 Highland Drove for lunch
2.00 Crossing the river to Little Salkeld we visit The Watermill. This is the only working watermill producing organic flour in Cumbria, where we will have a guided tour.
3.00 Time to visit the adjacent shop and café, where afternoon tea will be served.
4.00 Depart to return to Rothay.
7.30 Dinner

Wednesday 24th November
8.30-9.30 Breakfast
9.45-10.45 Talk, Heating the House with Nicholas. How one of man’s basic requirements was dealt with before the days of central heating and so created something both practical and decorative.
10.45-11.15 Coffee
11.15-12.15 Talk, The Adam Family, A Scottish Architectural Dynasty with Nicholas. The famous Robert Adam is the best-known of this family. In this talk we look into his background and the support he had from his brothers.
12.30 Lunch (not included)
2pm Arrive in own transport at Blackwell, Windermere, for a Masterclass on Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott with Dr Kathy Haslam. This is the first of an ongoing series of lectures arranged with Blackwell on, not only the house but the arts of the period. Baillie Scott in addition to being the architect of the house was one of the most innovative of the architects of the period. Dr. Haslam was for a number of years Curator at the Geffrye Museum in London.
4pm Depart Blackwell. (Afternoon tea is available at the house, not included).
7.30 Dinner

Thursday 25th November
8.30-9.30 Breakfast.
9.45-10.45 The Late King’s Goods. The dispersal of the Royal Collection by Oliver Cromwell, except for a few things he kept back for himself... with Nicholas Merchant.
10.45-11.15 Coffee
11.15-12.15 Talk, Some Country Houses of the 20th Century with Nicholas. The 1950’s saw the demise of the country house…..or did it? A surprising number have been built in the intervening years.
12.30 Lunch (not included)

9.00 The Marking of the Quiz

Friday 26th November
