11.00-12.00 Talk: Caroline Boom, Georg Jensen and the Arts and Crafts Movement. A look at the work of this distinctive Danish Silversmith, and his place in the work of the Arts and Crafts movement.

2.00 NEW FEATURE. Guests are invited to bring along “My Favourite Possession”. Challenge Nicholas to identify that strange object you bought at a car-boot sale or tell you something of that brooch which you inherited from Aunt Vera.

10.00 Depart by Bus for Kendal and Kirby Lonsdale
10.30 Arrive Kendal Town Hall for a private visit to see the Kendal Civic plate. The holding of silver at Kendal is remarkable, not only does it contain two ceremonial maces dating from the 17th century, but also work by our lecturer, Tony Kelly, dating from 400 years later.
12.00 Depart to drive to Whelprigg House, nr Kirkby Lonsdale for lunch and tour of the house. The home of the Bowring family, dating from 1834 by George Webster, the local Kendal architect responsible in part for Kendal Town-hall
2.30 Depart via Kirby Lonsdale for shopping.
4.00 Return to Rothay

9.30-10.30 Talk: Chinese Export Porcelain. Nicholas looks at a particular aspect of ceramic collecting which has fascinated not only Britain but Europe and America since the 16th century.
10.30-11.30 Morning Coffee
11.30-12.30 Talk: The Crowning of Kings. In anticipation of the Diamond Jubilee of HM The Queen, Nicholas looks at the history of this ceremony with its mystical and personal associations.
12.30-2.00 Lunch (not included)
2.00. Visit in own transport to the Steam Boat Museum. This museum (not yet open to the general public) is the final resting place of some 40 sailing boats ranging from row-boats to steam launches which originally plied Lake Windermere

9.30-10.30 Talk: The Jewellery of René Lalique. With Nicholas. The late 19th century Art Nouveau craftsman, most famous for his glass, was a designer of jewellery of great originality, sought after by the likes of Sarah Bernhardt and La Belle Otero.

11.30-12.30 Talk: The Making of a Silversmith. With Tony Kelly. Tony is a Lakeland Craftsman working in Kendal who describes his craft and how he came to work in this ancient material
